Biography
Bülent Ersoy is one of the strongest voices in Classical Turkish Music. She saw the light of the world 1952 in Istanbul. Her heart beats since her childhood for Classical Turkish Music. Bülent Ersoy got many private lessons in conservatories from communities and from experts such as Melahat Pars and Ridvan Aytan. With the blessing of God, that is her voice, and with her academic qualifications she finished the conservatory of Istanbul and began her music career. Her first longplay came out in 1971 from the label Saner Plak. The songs "Lüzüm Kalmadi" (It's not necessary) and "Neye Yarar Gelisin" (What brings your coming) found their place in this longplay. In the year 1974 she gave her first performance in Maksim (Istanbul). Maksim was one of the well-known music locations, where the greatest Divas gave performances like Müzeyyen Senar, Emel Sayin, Muazzez Abaci. She took with her act case of ethusiasm of the Turkish society. She also inspired her listeners with her unique voice and her feminine countenance. In 1977 was her second and in 1977 her third concert there in Maksim. As the successor of the icon Müzeyyen Senar; with her strong voice and with her immaculate attitude she became the Superstar of Turkey. "Beddua" (Maledictin), "Bahari Bekliyen Kumrular Gibi" (Like doves, who await the spring) and "Dert Cekmeye Gidiyorum" (I'm going to suffer) she gave proof of her professionalism and climbed fast the stairs of success. Because of economical reasons, the Turkish music market gave preferential treatment to Pop, Fantasy and Arabesque Music in the middle oh the 70's. In spite of that, Bülent Ersoy published a Classical Turkish Music longplay consisting of old and new songs. With this risky exploit, she broke all the records and won the hearts of Turkish listeners. In 1980 Bülent Ersoy favored the feminine gender and had an operation in London. Operatons of this kind were not allowed in Turkey. Still in the same year, she was prohibited from performing on stage for 8 years from the former president Kenan Evren. With respect to that decision she decided to live a life in exile in Freiburg im Breisgau Germany. During this time, she recorded many albums and videotaped many films. At that time the French and German governments offered her the title of "Public Artist", their passport and much money because they wanted Bülent Ersoy to become their public artist, who should have the aim to scandalize or speak ill about the reputation of the Turkish government and the Turkish army. She always strictly rejected this kind of offers and was always loyal to her people and country. Before her concert in the Olympia Hall in Paris, a reporter from the public television of France asked her the question how a country like Tukey could forbid such a strong voice to perform and what she thought about that. Her answer was: "That's our inner political thing!" After 8 years, the public president Turgut Özal made the prohibition void. Bülent Ersoy is worldwide the one artist, who invented her own law in a country. It is forbidden to get a rose identity card for transgender people, so she became a privilege from the president. Turgut Özal invalidated this prohibition only for a night,so in the night they made Bülent Ersoy's rose identity card and after they finished he validated the law again. The most critical moment of her life was 1989 in Adana, where a listener shot her in the abdomen 5 times. He had a song wish but Bülent Ersoy rejected because she sings only exigent songs. As a result she survived the tragical shots, but lost one of her kidneys. Because of her generous and religious countenance, she forgave him after a few years. Her hit albums are "Düskünüm Sana" (I'm dependent from you), "Yasamak Istiyorum" (i want to live), "Biz Ayrilamayiz" (We are inseperable) and "Ablan Kurban Olsun Sana" (Your big sister may sacrifie herself for you). In the year 1995, she published with the composer Selcuk Tekay her successful album "Benim Dünya Güzellerim" (My beautifuls of the world). In the same year she published another album "Alaturka 95" where she sang only Classical Turkish Music songs from greatest composers like Haci Arif Bey, Münir Nurettin Selcuk, Ismail Hakki Bey and Kemani Serkis Efendi. Another successful album was recorded in 1997 "Maazallah" (God pay attention to us), she worked on this album with composers such as Halil Karaduman and Osman Ismen. She sang closest to popular songs, anonymous songs too. Before the album was on the market, it became sold in high amounts. With the charming videoclip "Maazallah", she caught the eyes of the Turkish society, especially the scene where she bathes like Cleopatra in a bathtub filled with milk. Lastly she made her comeback in 2001 with the hit album "Canimisn" (You're my heart). The song "Hani Bizim Sevdamiz" (Where is our love) broke records. and the videoclip, where Bülent Ersoy dies for her ex- lover and the ex-lover cries in front of her gravestone, touched the hearts of the people. Today she celebrates her 30th jubilee in her grandiose musical career. She gave countless concerts in metropolis from New York, London, Paris to Melbourne in Australia. Next to Turks, she also became the attention of foreigners. Bülent Ersoy is the first Turkish artist, who gave performances 1980 in the Palladium Hall in London and 1983 in Madison Square Garden New York. A special and unique concert was on the 30th March 1997 in the Olympia Hall (Paris). It was an exemplary concert, where she charmed her audience 4 hours long with 50 orchestra members. She put out until today 30 very successful albums, played in leading roles of 11 movies and got many important awards. 1997 the laboratory of voice in Japan examined her voice and declared it as "Completely Immaculate". On that matter, she got the "International Montu Merid Musicdoctor" title. The country Aserbaidschan gave her the title of "Public Singer". Formerly she was in a position of hard rivalry with "the Sun of Classical Turkish Music" Zeki Müren. Neverthless, they had a respectful relationship. Present-time, her friends are great names like Ibrahim Tatlises, Orhan Gencebay, Seda Sayan and the Sophia Loren of Turkey Türkân Soray. She also has a good relationship, we can say like a mother daughter relations with the two successors Sibel Can and Ebru Gündes. From the past until today, the icon of fashion Nur Yerlitas has been beside her as a friend. Finally she became an authority on Classical Turkish Music/Ottoman Classical Music with her unmistakeable style and her unique voice. She conqured the hearts of the people and they defined Bülent Ersoy worthy of the name Diva .
